San Antonio Chapter Tours the Valero Retail Distribution Center

On June 28, 2011, 35 members of the San Antonio Chapter of the NDTA toured the Valero Retail Distribution Center in Schertz, Texas.  The 132,000 square feet distribution center, with 2.6 million cubic feet of storage space, was opened in April 2005 and is managed and operated by Core-Mark International, Inc.

Prior to the tour, Cliff Altizer, outgoing Chapter President opened the General Membership Meeting, announcing his reassignment to Washington DC.  He told the group he had truly enjoyed his tenure as president and expressed his sincere appreciation for the support from the general membership and especially that of his fellow Chapter Officers and Board Members.

Next, Rufus Reed, NDTA Texas State President, administered the oath of office to newly elected officers and members of the Board of Directors as well as current Board members.  photo links  List of Officers & Board Members.

Altizer then passed the "Gavel" to newly elected Chapter President, Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Bill Fisher (Ret.).  Fisher thanked everyone for their vote of confidence in electing him, saying he was looking forward to being Chapter President over the coming year.  He then presented Altizer with a "Gavel Plaque," commemorating his presidency of the San Antonio Chapter   photo link.

Fisher then announced the next Board meeting on July 7, 2011, at 1130, at Grady's BBQ, 6510 San Pedro (San Pedro & Jackson Keller Road).  He thanked all in attendance and, there being no further business or comments from the floor, adjourned the meeting and turned the event over to the Valero tour guides.

Prior to the tour, guests received a detailed briefing delivering of a wide range of commodities to the Valero-owned "Corner Stores," across North America.  The Distribution Center manages over 2,500 Valero brand products plus items from other vendors such as milk, bread, sodas, beer, etc.  After the briefing, tour guests were divided into two groups for a first-hand view of the largely automated operation.  There were many fascinating aspects of everything we saw but what stood out most was the high efficiency of the automated packaging lines and sorting of hundreds of products, which filled several hundred store orders, grouping products by truckload according to destination in stop order sequence.    See photos here   All photos courtesy of Timothy J. Those of us who took the tour found it quite enjoyable.   We especially enjoyed the walk through the huge freezer with temperatures between 10 and 20 degrees below zero.  Each guest was presented with a gift bag containing a model of a Valero tanker truck and several Valero orner Store products.  If you weren't able to make it, you might want to consider taking friends or loved ones on  a tour.  Contact information is provided below:
